Last week, Trump announced that the U.S. and Mexico have agreed to temporarily close the border to “nonessential travel to curb the spread” of COVID-19. This includes anyone attempting to claim asylum at the U.S. – Mexico border. At a press conference, Trump said that “the move would allow the administration to quickly deport asylum-seekers and other migrants” without providing them with due process.
Michelle Brané at the Women’s Refugee Commission stated, “President Trump has been falsely scapegoating immigrant communities in the name of public safety since he came into office. This rule would unquestionably violate both domestic and international law and is an abdication of our moral responsibility to protect vulnerable people.”
