A former nurse at the Irwin County ICE detention center in Ocilla, Georgia has filed two complaints with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The first complaint involves the detention center’s inability to take proper COVID-19 precautions and its failure to provide adequate medical care. The second complaint involves allegations that ICE has performed hysterectomies (an operation to remove the uterus) on women, sometimes without their consent.
The facility in question is owned by a private prison company called LaSalle Corrections. It is difficult to hold these private prison companies accountable. A 2019 Office of Inspector General (OIG) report on an investigation of these contracted detention facilities found that the ICE “routinely waives its own standards, including those meant to ensure the health and safety of detainees.” LaSalle Corrections operates 18 facilities across the southern United States.
