On Monday, March 16, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) sued ICE on behalf of immigrants detained at the Tacoma Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, WA. The organizations are asking the detention centers to release individuals that are at a high risk for illness or death under COVID-19 exposure. See at ACLU.
On Wednesday, March 18, ICE declared that it would “temporarily adjust its enforcement posture” by focusing “enforcement on public safety risks and individuals subject to mandatory detention based on criminal grounds.”
Further, “ICE will not carry out enforcement operations at or near health care facilities.” Therefore, individuals should not avoid seeking medical care because of their immigration status.
