Trump Policies Delay Citizenship for Immigrants Before Election

Source: Forbes

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, USCIS has stopped naturalization ceremonies and interviews. A study by Boundless Immigration found that over 126,000 would-be American citizens will now have to wait, and may not be able to gain the right to vote in time for the 2020 election.

Boundless also found that about 2,100 immigrants run out of time to vote each day USCIS does not allow naturalization ceremonies to occur online.

House Democrats included many immigration-related provisions in the new coronavirus relief package, including requiring USCIS to hold remote naturalization interviews. The bill would also expedite issuing green cards and temporary work visas to health care workers. The bill will likely pass in the House, but Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, said that the bill will be “dead on arrival.”
