USCIS’ Proposes Changes to the Affidavit of Support

Source: Immigration Impact

USCIS is expecting immigrant families to find a notary and provide private bank account information in order to sponsor their loved ones for a green card.

Anyone who sponsors an intending immigrant is essentially promising the government that they will financial support the immigrant in the event that they cannot support themselves. These proposed requirements create unnecessary burdens, especially during this time of COVID-19. Further, the agency lacks statutory and regulatory authority to make these changes.
