What You Need to Know About the Census Citizenship Question

The Supreme Court has not decided whether the federal government can legally ask people about their citizenship as part of the 2020 census. Requiring individuals to disclose their citizenship on census forms would leave non-citizens out of the “national headcount.” Minority groups (a mostly Democratic demographic) have been historically underrepresented in census reports, but this additional limitation would shift political power more to the right.
