Why Asylum Seekers are Being Sent Back to Mexico

Source: The New York Times, The Daily Podcast

This Daily Podcast discusses the “Remain in Mexico” policy. The policy that began at San Ysidro port of entry and applied to only single males has now expanded to not only other cities, but to apply to families as well. Through stories of an Honduran national and a family from El Salvador, the Daily considers the real impact the policy has on individuals who are being sent to Mexico to continue their asylum proceedings. Knowing full well that waiting in the U.S. for his immigration proceeding means living in detention facilities, the Honduran national states: “I would prefer a thousand times more to be in the U.S., be it for months or for years even if I am detained.” What “Remain in Mexico” means for these asylum seekers is going back to a state of vulnerability to the dangers that they are fleeing from.
